sc Sciencenter175Tom Reed announced the Sciencenter Discovery Museum, a hands-on educational center and museum for kids in Ithaca, will receive $381,695 as part of the National Leadership Grants for Museums from the Federal Institution of Museum and Library Services.

"I care about ensuring families throughout the area have access to educational resources, especially when they help our kids get interested in science at such an early age," said Reed. "It's only fair we provide them with the support they need to continue this service to our community."

The grant will allow the Sciencenter to collaboratively develop science museum toolkits for Head Start teachers, filling a critical gap in science training and cultivating an early appreciation for Science. The program will help preschoolers in traditionally underserved communities have access to early science learning.

"Encouraging an early love for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math helps our kids for life," Reed continued. "It's vital that we give them every advantage to excel in these high-needs fields." The competitive grant program received over 62 applications, with only 15 of those receiving funding.  The program will ultimately distribute over $5 million.
