A partnership between Life's So Sweet Chocolates and Challenge Workforce Solutions was recognized October 19th in Albany at the Works For Me Awards, hosted by the New York State Office For People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).

The event, hosted at the New York State Museum, celebrates the abilities and contributions that people with developmental disabilities make to the workplace. OPWDD recognized Life's So Sweet owner Darlynne Overbaugh, as well as Danya S., who is legally blind and has been diagnosed with a developmental disability. Danya started a work placement at Overbaugh's former store in Trumansburg in 2013, and was later hired by Overbaugh, handling tasks such as stocking, packaging, and even helping with cutting chocolate.

"This is all a result of Danya's hard work and positive attitude," Overbaugh said. "The support she's received from Challenge has made this all possible. The strength of Challenge is finding the right person to fit in the right environment."

In all, OPWDD recognized 12 partnerships between employers, school, nonprofits, and employees who have found success in their places of work at locations throughout New York state.

"Danya is a perfect example of the positives that come when employers are committed to creating opportunities for everyone to be a valued and respected part of the workforce," said Joe Sammons, Executive Director at Challenge. "Life's So Sweet is a wonderful business that is thriving in downtown Ithaca, and we couldn't be prouder to be partners with them, and we are thrilled that Danya has had so much success working there!"
