mailmanI read with interest the editorial on NY's travel ban for public employees to Indiana but do not intend to get into a debate over the merits of balancing religious rights with non-discrimination.  But, what NY and other states have done with these bans is just plain outlandish.

The doctrine of 'comity' between governments says we will stay out of your business and what you do in your jurisdiction if you don't meddle in ours.  Whatever we may think of what Indiana has done, it is basically not New York state's business.  And, it invites retaliation.  Indiana and the other states with state analogs to the federal religious freedom restoration act might now start banning travel to New York State and other states that have banned them.

We don't need ideological wars between the states. Some time ago, NY passed a new tax on commuters from NJ who worked in NY.  NJ then retaliated with a similar tax applicable to New Yorkers who worked in NJ, a tax applicable only so long as NY imposed its tax.

We don't need these childish petulant behaviors by a state over what another state does at home.  Let's mind our own business, whether Indiana is right or wrong.
