mailmanFull disclosure: I'm a registered Republican but more along the lines of Eisenhower era platforms. By today's slippery standards, that makes me rather liberal.

That said, thank you to Casey Stevens. I hadn't given the perennial jail controversy much thought, because I've become bored. But I like Casey's argument. It's important. People, including offenders and the rest of us, are being hurt by our jail conditions.

I support the programs designed to keep people out of jail, but an expanded jail with better facilities can give "breathing space" to these programs and make them more effective while helping the inmates and their visitors. And ultimately, save money and lives.
