The first annual Ithaca Shooting Stars Invitational Tournament was held Friday December 2 through Sunday December 4, 2005. After five years of hosting tournaments under the Silver Stick name, Tompkins Girls Hockey Association selected to run an independent format event. Twenty-two girls ice hockey teams competed in games at The RINK and at Cass Park in four age divisions:12U, 14U, 16U and 19U.

SUNDAY
The 19U Shooting Stars won the 19U division championship defeating the Niagara Coyotes 3-1. Allyson Granish had a hat trick to lead the Ithaca offense. One goal was unassisted, one was helped by Emily McPherson and the other by McPherson and Emily Grippin.They advanced to this game by beating the Lady Patriots of Philadelphia 6-1. Megan Nervina scored twice while Grippin, Deanna Sturdevant and Robin Worsell of Lansing each notched one. McPherson had three assists. The Patriots goalie made 34 saves in the loss. Niagara advanced by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 19Us 8-1. Roseane Kirbis scored two goals for the Coyotes while six other girls scored the balance in the win.

Ithaca's 14Us advanced to their age division championship by going undefeated in preliminary and crossver play including Sunday morning win over the Webster Cyclones, 2-1. Whitney and Alex Colbert each scored. Alex was assisted by Emma Marshall and Lansing's Lauren Cole. Webster's Mikaela Thompson made 21 saves in the loss. The Buffalo Regals who lost to Ithaca on Saturday, advanced by defeating the Amherst Knights 3-0. Jessica Blas made 25 saves to earn the shut-out. Whitney Colbert scored early in the 14U championship game assisted by Erin Grainger. The lead held until late in the third period when a puck bounced off a player's helmet and over the head of Ithaca goalie Sara Eisenhut, of Lansing, who made 16 saves in total in the contest. This put the Buffalo Regals on the scoreboard and the game into overtime. After no scoring in the first OT which was 5 players vs. 5 players and the second OT with 4 players vs. 4 players, the tournament rules called for a shootout decision. The Regals scored and were named division champions.

The 12U and 16U division championship games were also tied at the end of regulation play. In the 12U matchup between the Adirondack Northstars and Amherst Knights, no goals were scored until the second OT when Amherst's Jennifer Godin scored. The Tri-County Golden Eagles team from the Brockport area was tied 1-1 with the Buffalo Regals 16U squad. Late in the first OT, Rosie Hart scored assisted by Steffani Ruf. Ruf also assisted on their team's first goal by Alyssa Webster. Buffalo goalie Rachael Bochiechio made 44 saves in the loss.

In other Sunday action, consolation games were played in the 14U and 19U divisions. Perinton Blades 14U and Troy Albany Ice Cats 14U tied 2 -2. Shan Tuong and Nora Mishanec scored for Troy, and Kelsey Talty scored twice for Perinton. Frederick Fury girls team of Maryland defeated the Gypsy Chicks of Newburgh, NY, 2 -0 . Kate Beckley scored both goals for the Fury 19Us.


SATURDAY
On Saturday, 17 games were played. Wearing the navy, gold and white of the Ithaca Shooting Stars, the local 14U and 19U teams were victorious and will advance to the semi-finals as top seeds of their division. The 12U semi-finals were played late Saturday, and the Ithaca team did not advance to the championship despite a strong effort.

Ithaca 14Us defeated the Buffalo Regals 7-3 lead by Whitney Colbert's two goals and two assists. Katie Long, Alex Colbert, Emma Marshall and Lucy Marshall also scored. When the 19Us met the Frederick Maryland team they challenged the goalie with over 30 shots. Allyson Granish and Emily Grippin each scored twice. The 12U Shooting Stars were defeated 3-0 by the Amherst Knights. Goalie Angela Everhart and the defensive players allowed no goals in the final period of action. She stopped 30 shots that did come her way.

In the 16U division, the day began with Adirondack and Perinton playing to a 2-2 tie. Colleen Callaghan and Emily Graham scored for Adirondack, and Nikki Stancampiano and Megan Hurley for Perinton. Tri-County defeated the Buffalo Regals 5-1 and the Adirondack Northstars 3-0 to advance to the championship game Sunday. Steffani Ruf recorded two assists while Kim Hunt had three goals and an assist. The Regals' Rachael Bochiechio stopped 21 Tri-County shots on goal and Adirondack's Brittany Wilson made 30 saves. Meanwhile the Regals beat Perinton 5-2 setting up a rematch with Tri-County for the division championship. Amanda Strobele recorded a hat trick for Buffalo while teammate Ashley Druar had two goals.

Mamaroneck 12Us were victorious over Webster 5-1 and Brewster fell to Amherst 4-1. Elizabeth Wulf had a hat trick for Mamaroneck. Amherst's Shauna Clair scored two goals. Later Mamaroneck was edged by Adirondack, 2-0. Celine Dreitlein and Jolie Navatka scored goals for the win. In the 12U consolation round, Brewster then beat the Webster Cyclones 7- 0. Pell Bermingham had a hat trick and recorded two assists for the victors.

In other 14U action, Webster and Troy played to a 1-1 tie. Nora Michanec scored for Troy and Angelika Weslowski scored for Webster assisted by Jessica Blind. The Buffalo Regals edged Perinton 4-3 and Amherst squeaked by Webster 3-2. Stancapiano had one goal and two assists in the loss. The Regals received goals from four different players and 21 saves by Bocheiechio. Blind and Chloe Hovey scored for Webster in the loss while Amhert's Leslie Newton had made two assists.

In the 19Us division, Niagara took off after a close first period and beat the Gypsy Chicks of Newburgh 11-0. The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Frederick Fury 4-0 and the Philly Lady Patriots bested the Gypsy team 5-3. For the Niagara Coyotes, Holly Faber had two goals and three assists, Jillian Harvey scored two goals and two assists, and Roseanne Kirbis notched two. Megan Divestea made 46 stops in the loss to Niagara. Frederick's goalie stopped 48 shots while the Penguins' Cummings had a hat trick in the win.


FRIDAY
On the first day of action, the Ithaca 12U Shooting Stars opened the tournament with a 5-1 win over the Webster Cyclones 12Us. Nitsan Goldstein had two goals while Lauren Herrick scored one and had two assists. Meredith Kirk and Catherine Watkins also scored for the home team. Later in the day they lost a close game with the Mamaroneck Tigers 2-0. Goalie Angela Everhart made 11 saves in the even matched game in which the Ithaca girls also shot 10 times. Elizabeth Wulf scored both goals for Mamaroneck.

In other 12U action Amherst Knights edged the Adirondack Northstars 1-0, but later on Adirondack defeated the Brewster Bulldogs 2-0. Jennifer Godin and Emily Koestler scored for Amherst. In the later game Adirondack's Devin Finn had a goal and an assist.

The Ithaca 14Us began with a 4-1 victory over the Perinton Blades 14Us. Lucy Marshall scored two goals and Lauren Cole had two assists. Emma Marshall and Whitney Colbert scored the other goals for the locals. Goalie Sara Eisenhut made 22 saves and Perinton's goalie needed to stop 34 shots in the loss.

In other 14U action Amherst Knights beat the Troy Albany Ice Cats 8-0. Jess Czamara had four goals and three assists to lead the Amherst team. Amanda Maraschiello scored twice.

The Ithaca 19U Shooting Stars edged the Pittsburgh Penguins 19Us 3-2. Emily McPherson assisted on all three Ithaca goals which were scored by Megan Nervina, Lansing's Hannah Kyle and Emily Grippin. Tiffany Cummings scored both goals for the visitors. In other 19U action the Niagara Coyotes won over the Philadelphia Patriots, 4-1.

In the 16U division, there is no Ithaca team playing this year. Tri-County Eagles from the Brockport area beat the Perinton Blades 16Us 6-1 and the Buffalo Regals defeated the Adirondack Northstars 3-0. Kim Hunt had a hat trick and one assist to lead the Eagles. For the Regals Ashley Durar scored one goal and one assist. The other two goals came from Elizabeth Perna and Elizabeth McCluskey.
