nikki_deanOswego, N.Y. - Oswego State senior student-athlete Nikki Dean has been selected as the recipient of the Oswego State Woman’s Scholar Athlete Award for the 2010-11 year. This award represents the highest academic award presented to a Laker female student-athlete who has demonstrated athletic and academic success in at least two years of participation while having earned a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average, as voted on by athletic department staff.

Dean, who has a 3.59 grade point average majoring in zoology, served as a captain of the Oswego State women’s swimming and diving team this season. The Lansing, N.Y. native owns individual school records in the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 1000 freestyle, and the 1650 freestyle and is part of the record-holding 800 freestyle relay. She was also a two-time SUNYAC Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week. Dean has been named to the SUNY Oswego Dean's List each semester, selected for the SUNYAC Commissioner's List once, and named to the SUNYAC All-Academic List three times.

In the classroom, Dean has received the SCAC Grant to conduct research with a professor and the Doug Halliday Scholarship, which allows students to conduct independent research during the summer. She has spent six weeks conducting research in South Africa and served as an intern at Big Cat Rescue. Dean has been a part of the Mentors Offering Support to Transfers (MOST) Program and is a member of Tau Sigma, the transfer student honor society. Currently, she is in the process of applying for the Peace Corps.

Both student-athletes will be recognized at the SUNY Oswego Honors Convocation on Friday, April 15.
