The Museum of the Earth is open 10 am to 5 pm every day during local school’s Spring Break week, April 15 – 19, with special activities highlighting our wonderful "Survivors: Up Close with Living Fossils" exhibit. On Saturday, April 20, the Museum will be hosting its annual “Dino EGGstravaganza”. All activities are included with the price of admission.

The "Survivors" exhibit touch tank, featuring horseshoe crabs and starfish, will be open Monday (4/15) 11 am - 12 noon, Thursday (4/18) 10 am - 12 noon, and Friday (4/18) 10 am - 12 noon & 3 pm - 4pm. In addition to the touch tank, the Museum’s current special exhibit, "Survivors: Up Close with Living Fossils", features other live examples of plants and animals considered “living fossils” and interactive and informative displays about species seemingly forgotten by time.

On Monday (4/15), 3 pm - 4 pm, Dr. Thomas Evans from Cornell will be at the Museum to talk with visitors about his research on a special "living fossil": The Lamprey. Learn more about this unique creature, its life cycle, the important roles it plays in the ecosystem, and the different species of lamprey that are present in New York State.

On Tuesday (4/16), 11 am - 12 noon, we have a special display on Nautiluses and Buoyancy. The nautilus, one of the many “living fossils” on display, lives too deep for most humans to ever see one. But how does this mysterious creature get around? And why are conservation efforts so difficult?

Wednesday (4/17), there is Tortoise Tales Storytime for the little ones at 11 am with Timothy the Tortoise. Come and listen to a story with Timothy, one of the Animal Ambassadors from our "Survivors: Up Close with Living Fossils" exhibit! Afterwards guests are welcome to visit with Timothy and ask questions.

On Thursday (4/18), from 1 to 2 pm, a special display about "Very Cool Vestigial Organs". Come and learn about vestigial organs--we all have them! These little pieces of our anatomy are biologic time capsules of our very own.
Friday (4/19), from 1 to 2 pm, it is time for Awesome Alligators! Come and learn the difference between an alligator, a crocodile, and a gharial with specimens and coloring sheets with the different animals.

There is fun for the whole family on Saturday, April 20 at the Museum of the Earth’s annual "Dino EGGstravaganza!" from 10 am to 1 pm. The day includes a noncompetitive, candy-free egg hunt throughout the Museum exhibits, plus a special room for extra young egg collectors. Along with the egg hunt, we will have egg-cellent egg-tivities to explore.

Follow the evolution of the egg on Earth at our Egg Evolution touch table. Explore the eggs through the ages from real to fossils. Learn how modern eggs compare to dinosaur eggs. Create your own egg at our egg craft table. Get up close and personal with horseshoe crabs and starfish in our "Survivors: Up Close with Living Fossils" special exhibit's Touch Tank. There will also be a special room for extra young egg collectors (those under 5 years old) to hunt for eggs and play, plus egg-related stories at story time.
