James Myron Sherwood, 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the Hospice unit at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Va. Jim's prior residence was The Laurels of Willow Creek in Midlothian, Va.

Jim relocated to Richmond area August 2008 to be closer to family members, but was a life long resident of Ithaca, New York.

Jim was born on March 5, 1913, the eldest of four sons to Edmund and Eva Corrington Sherwood. Jim lived all his life in upstate New York, married Edith Small, August 23, 1936. Jim retired from Cornell University in 1975 and had a full active retirement with his wife, Edith. They traveled extensively, loved square dancing, gardening, and were both members of the Danby Federated Church. Jim loved bowling, playing cards, golfing with his brothers, and especially loved the New York Mets.

Jim, is survived by his daughter and son in law, Margaret and David Wilson, formerly of Ithaca, now residing in Richmond, Va. His brother, Stanley Sherwood, eight grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. Jim is predeceased by his wife, Edith in July 2006, his daughter, Susan Minot Grabowski in May 2000, his son, David Lawrence in February 2000, and his brothers, Edmund and Arthur Sherwood.

Family and friends may call Monday (June 1, 2009) at 10:00 am at the Herson Funeral Home, located at the Family Service Center, 110. S. Geneva Street, Ithaca. Burial will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery.
