The Lansing Bobcat boys varsity basketball had a mixed week, with a home win against the Whitney Point Eagles on Friday, January 26th and a home loss against the Dryden Purple Lions on Tuesday, January 30th.

In last Friday’s game, Whitney point won the tip off, but Langston Hopkins was able to control the ball for Lansing. A Griffin Nelson 3 pointer on a subsequent possession would start the Lansing scoring with a Hopkins 3 building the lead to 6-2. Whitney Point’s big man was a force on the boards, but Lansing was able to continue their hot shooting, leading by as many as 15 points with a minute left in the frame.

A 5 point run by the Eagles at the end of the quarter would have the Bobcats in control, 22-12. In the 2nd quarter, WP’s center scored two quick field goals, before Nelson was able to put in a jumper from the key for Lansing’s 1st points. With 1:05 left in the half, Lansing would call a time out with a 4 point advantage, and the team would close the 2nd with that same lead, 29-25.

In the 3rd quarter, an offensive rebound and put-back, and then a 3 pointer on their next possession would provide the Eagles with their first lead of the game, 30-29. Luke Winslow sunk 1 of 2 from the charity stripe to tie the game. A technical foul on a WP player would allow Garrett Bell to convert 2 free throws, and then two buckets by Winslow would put the Bobcats up 39-30 with 4:30 to go in the quarter. WP would go on a 9-3 run of their own, however, shrinking the Bobcat lead to 42-39, before Ethan Burt hit a late jumper to close the quarter up 44-39. Winslow hit another 3 to start the Lansing scoring in the 4th, but the Eagles would keep it close. Some clutch free throws by Winslow and Bell kept the team in front, and the game would end with a Bobcat victory, 59-52.

Bell was high scorer for the Lansing squad, putting in 22, and Winslow added 15 of his own.

The Lansing Bobcat JV squad dropped their contest by a score of 74-67.

On Tuesday night, the Dryden Purple Lions visited the Bobcats in Lansing. Hopkins was again able to intercept the opposition’s tip-off, and Nelson started the Bobcat scoring with a field goal. Both teams struggled to put points on the board, however, with Lansing in the lead after 5 minutes had passed, 6-2. A Winslow 3 pointer late in the 1st frame would give the team an 11-6 advantage as the quarter ended. Nelson added his own 3 pointer to start the 2nd, but the Lions would stay close, bringing a Lansing time out at 5:30, with a 14-10 lead. Nelson was able to put in two more 3’s, building a 10 point lead at one point. A Winslow bucket with seconds to go would provide a Bobcat lead, 24-17, entering the locker room at the half.

Dryden would be the first to score in the 3rd, with a nice post pass, but Winslow would answer with another 3. Lansing turnovers and Dryden offensive rebounds would allow the Lions to tie the game at 27, with 3:25 to go. The Bobcats seemed to hit a wall, with Dryden eventually building a 5 point lead off a late free throw. Winslow would bring the score to within two points with another 3, but a game ending ‘no call’ layup attempt would result in a Bobcats defeat, 47-45.
The JV Bobcats gained a win in their game.

The four Bobcat seniors, Jack Babuka, Trey McDonald, David Waldman, and Joe Miller-LaBar were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

The Bobcats travel to Union Springs for a game against the Wolves on Tuesday February 6th.
