The Lansing boys varsity basketball team picked up two home victories over the last week, with wins against Whitney Point on Dec 13, and Dryden on Dec 20.

Against Whitney Point (WP), the team got off to a quick start with two points off the tip off, but struggled to convert plenty of good looks into points in the first frame, ending that quarter tied at 8. The Bobcats started the second quarter in a zone defense, resulting in WP's shooting going cold. Lansing foul trouble kept the contest close though, ending with a 17-16 Lansing advantage at the half.

The Second Annual Alumni Soccer Game on Sobus Field was played at noon, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The First Annual Alumni Soccer game played last year, was organized by the late Lansing Athletic Director Adam Heck.

Heck wanted the game to be an annual event, so keeping with his wishes, first year boys head coach Benji Parkes, coming off a state final four appearance, took the reins and organized the game.

soccer shirt120On Saturday, at Middletown High school, in the Class C state semi-final game, the Lansing Bobcats boys’ soccer season came to an end.  With 42 seconds left in a 1-1 game, the World of Inquiry Griffins headed a throw-in from the left sideline into the upper right corner of the goal for the 2-1 win. A heartbreaking loss for the Bobcats and fans, whose hopes had been to compete the next day for the state title, something they haven’t done since 2013.

"They had a really tough loss," Superintendent of Schools Chriss Pettograsso said Monday.  "It was tough to see, but they played a great game.  There was a nice presentation afterwards.  I would really like to thank our coaches Benji Parkes, Pat Pidgeon, Dave Schlesinger, and Jamie Saroka.  They did an amazing job.  They are a reall class act.  They pulled everybody together."

The Bobcats struck first in the game. A cross from the corner from Nick Parkes was headed into the goal by Carson Zuidema with 15 minutes left in the first half. The half ended with Lansing up 1-0. Shortly after the start of the second half, World of Inquiry tied it up. The two teams battled the rest of the second half looking like the game would go into overtime until with 42 seconds left, a header off the throw-in resulted in the winning goal for the Griffins of the World of Inquiry.

Lansing finishes its season with a record of 18-5, a section title and a regional title. First year head coach, Benji Parkes took over the reins of this team after a shocking and emotional beginning with the death of longtime head coach Adam Heck. With the help of assistant coaches Dave Schlesinger and Pat Pigeon he brought this team back to the state final four for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Heck was inducted posthumously into the New York State Soccer Association Hall Of Fame Saturday evening.

xcountryLast week, winter varsity sports seasons officially began -- but Mikaela Garcia was still hard at work preparing for one final cross country meet with several of her teammates by her side. For the second consecutive year, Garcia made the trip to the NYSPHSAA Championships, representing Lansing and Section IV after her third place finish at the Section IV Championships the week prior. In her first appearance at the state meet in 2015, Garcia finished 69th overall. This year, she finished in 32nd place with a new personal record of 20:21.4. With the entire girls team cheering her on at the Chenango Valley State Park course, the 2016 Lansing cross country season came to a close and the teams have their sights set on 2017 already.

The athletes started their season by hosting the Lansing Lighthouse 5K, an event that attracted over 200 runners with an anticipated future race date of August 19, 2017. The teams also hosted a youth cross country race on their new home course which debuted this year thanks to partnerships with the Lansing Recreation Department and the Lansing Pathways Committee. The team extended special thanks to Ian Golden for his help in designing the course as well as to Finger Lakes Running and Triathlon Company for the Pair Up shoe partnership.

In what can only be described as their best team performance of the season, the Lansing girls cross country team made a run for the Section IV Class C Championship title.  They were the underdogs, up against Newark Valley, a program that has won ten of the last twelve titles.  In the end, Newark Valley was victorious with 41 points to Lansing's 55.

For context, Newark Valley won last year's title with 24 points, Waverly took second with 91 points, and Lansing was third with 103 points.  The top five finishers in the race last year were from two schools: Windsor's Kaylee Stone won and was followed by four Newark Valley runners.  The top five finishers in this year's race were from four schools.

On an overcast Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Fields in Oneonta, NY the Lansing Boys Soccer team warmed up for their regional championship contest against Section 3 Bishop Ludden.  But 10 minutes before the start of the contest their opponent had yet to arrive.  Finally, the bus with the Bishop Ludden team arrived and an extra 30 minutes was put on the warm-up clock to allow this opponent time to warm up.

This didn't faze the Lansing boys because once the game started, 20 minutes late, the Lansing team dominated the first half of play.

The boys of Watkins Glen continued their extremely strong season with wins in the combined JV and Varsity boys 5K race.  Scoring a perfect score of 15 in the JV race and very low score of 20 in varsity, the Watkins Glen Senecas' performance was reflective of their number 2 ranking in the state. Patrick Hazlitt was the overall boys winner with a time of 17:05.2 and also the recipient of the IAC Sportsmanship Award.
