When is it possible to get to Scotland from Lansing in about 25 minutes by car? Last Saturday it was almost possible if you went to the Cortland Celtic Festival. The 5th annual festival was held in the Cortland fair grounds, which were filled with fans and descendants of Ireland and Scotland. Food, entertainment, outdoor events and Celtic merchants covered the fair grounds all day, culminating in an evening concert featuring popular bands Gaelic Storm and Enter the Haggis.

Kitchen Theatre Company begins 15th Anniversary Season

ITHACA, NY: The Kitchen Theatre Company (KTC) begins its 2005-2006 / 15th Anniversary season with The Price, Arthur Miller's twice Tony-nominated play that originally premiered in 1968 at the Morosco Theatre. The Price is the first of seven plays in KTC's Subscription Main Stage Series, and begins previews on Thursday, August 25 at 7:30pm, opens Saturday, August 27, and runs through Saturday, September 24, 2005.

A family's long-repressed dreams, desires and resentments bubble to the surface in this scorching examination of the American way of life by one of America's greatest 20th Century playwrights, Arthur Miller. Compelling and deeply moving, The Price explores the legacy of choices whose results control the present. "The big decision is always the one you don't realize you're making - till the results start coming in", says Victor,  "And then you're stuck with it".  Miller's characters lament between what was and what could have been.

Three Stars for National TreasureThree Stars for National TreasureIs Ben Gates descended from a family that holds a clue to a priceless national treasure that originated centuries ago from the Knights Templar? Or is he a nut?

You can bet it's the former when Nicholas Cage plays the determined treasure hunter. Unfortunately Ian Howe (played by Sean Bean) wants the treasure for himself, and is willing to do anything to get it. Add a major clue invisibly etched on the back of the Declaration of Independence and the chase is on.

Image   Up in the sky, look!  It's a bird!  It's a plane!  It's a high school! Sky High, literally floating among the clouds, is where you go to high school if you are a teenaged super hero.
This summer's PG Disney film takes takes you on a predictable yet watchable romp through another teenage popular crowd vs. geeks movie, but with a twist. These kids all have super powers. Well, almost all. Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) has none, despite being the son of the greatest living super hero team, The Commander (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream (Kelly Preston). What's a teenager to do?

Image The Fantastic Four

How do you make a comic strip into a feature film? Mike Hodges got it right with colorful, larger than life characters in 1980's Flash Gordon. Warren Beatty had a clue when he starred and directed in the stylized comic-book colored Dick Tracy. Unfortunately Tim Story missed a few basics in this summer's Fantastic Four, now playing at the Regal Cinema in the Pyramid Mall.

Four isn't a bad film. It's just not a good one. The main problem is the relationships between the characters -- while defined in the plot, the actors do little to make them believable. Who'd have thought that Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), with the power to stretch his flexible body through the crack under a door would give such a stiff performance? Or that Susan Storm, the Invisible Girl (Jessica Alba), would turn in such an opaque one?

Did you know that the crossword puzzles in the Lansing Star are written by top-notch professionals? The Star is very fortunate to have professional puzzles in our Entertainment section, thanks to Rochester puzzle maker and software developer Sam Bellotto, Jr. Mr. Bellotto wrote the software we use to display the puzzles on our site, as well as writing many of the puzzles we will feature from week to week. Additionally he has lined up some top names from the crossword world to provide puzzles for future issues.

Mr. Bellotto's CROSSDOWN began nearly a dozen years ago as a personal crossword construction program to help Mr. Bellotto develop puzzles. Since then it has grown to become the crossword development software of choice for serious professionals and amateurs alike. A clever feature exports puzzles to a Java "aplet" used to display puzzles on the Web -- this is what we use on our Crosswords page.
