posticon Bobcat Bowlers Shatter IAC Record

Waverly: The Lansing Bobcat Boys team shatters the IAC team record on the way to winning the IAC Tournament on Saturday. Behind its seniors led by Jon LaRock’s 299/754 series and Kyle Christopher’s 254/736 series the Bobcats all bowled very well as this was a total team effort. The top twenty bowlers receive awards at the championship and all of Lansing’s boys’ team was among those twenty.

The old record of 3275 was set earlier this year by these same Bobcats and the new record is now 3330 total pins. Waverly was a distant second with 2980 followed by Candor’s 2974. Other boys’ scores were TAE’s Zack Smith 687, Groton’s Mike Heyn 677, and Elmira Notre Dame John Siedman 674.

Rossi Lanes Elmira: The Lansing Bobcat Boys kept pace Tuesday night scoring a four point win over Elmira Notre Dame. Phil Kulis paced the Bobcats with a 255/651 followed by Jon LaRock 209/600.

On the Girls side the Lady Bobcats battled both sickness and the lanes to split with Notre Dame 2 & 2. Kristi Sullivan 176/474 led the girls and to show how important each pin is the girls won total pins by 1 pin. The IAC Championship Tournament is next for all team this coming Saturday at Valley Bowl in Waverly.

posticon Girls Basketball Finishes with Div III Perfect Record

The Lansing Girl's Basketball team completed their regular season with an overall record of 16-2, a IAC record of 15-1, and winners of Division III with a perfect 10-0 record. The Ladycats move on to the IAC Semi-finals to be played Tuesday February 13th at Groton High School.

Lansing matches up against Division I winner Elmira Notre Dame, the defending Class C State Champions, and currently ranked number one in the State Class C. That game will be the second game of a double header, with the first game between Newfield and Waverly scheduled to start at 5:30.

Rossi Lanes Elmira (1/27): The Lansing Boys won on Saturday defeating Waverly by 35 to capture the IAC Big House crown. Lansing totaled 3257 followed by Waverly’s 3222 and Candor’s 3154.  On the Girls side Waverly won with a 2434 followed by Lansing 2212 and TAE 2200.

There were many very good score Saturday as Tioga’s Joe Steiner led all scores 259/722, Lansing’s Jon La Rock 267/693, Candor’s Andy Hollenbeck 267/685, Marathon’s Brett McGrown  257/678 and TAE Zack Smith 241/675. On the Girls side Waverly’s Nicole Rice & Megan Paterson had 508 series, Lansing’s Kristi Sullivan 182/507 and Rachel Strohman 171/493.  All teams see action again this week in head to head matches as the season is winding down.

January 26 -- Lansing set three school track records at last Friday's Finger Lakes Invite at Cornell University . Ryann Cretney in the 1500m (4:54), Ken Tillapaugh in the long jump (20'2.25"), and Rusty Landon tied the 55m hurdle record (7.9).

The team also had three first place finishes. Jeremy Petak in the pole vault, Andy Lockwood in the shot put, and the girl's 1600m relay team (Christine Fuchs, Natalie Usack, Ryann Cretney, and Anna Mapes).

posticon Hall of Fame Welcomes New Members

The Lansing High School gym was packed Saturday when five individuals and a team were inducted into the Sorts Hall of Fame.  The ceremony was held between the Junior Varsity and varsity basketball games to a receptive crowd.  There was much to celebrate as Lansing won both games.  Before the ceremony the Hall of Fame Committee held a reception for the recipients and their families.  All five individual inductees and most of the 1955-1956 men's basketball team players made it, coming from as far as Michigan, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

posticon Two More Wins For Boys Basketball

The Boys Varsity Basketball team is 11-3.  They beat Groton 49-23 on Hall of Fame night last Saturday and were led by John Sluty who scored 13 points.

The Junior Varsity team is also doing well with a 9-5 season in which they are tied with the Chiefs for first place in the division.  On Hall of Fame night they defeated Groton 68-37.

posticon Lansing Wrestlers Grapple at IACs

The Lansing Wrestling team competed at the IAC tournament last weekend finishing 4th in the team race behind Waverly, Tioga, and Newark Valley.  Lansing had four individuals in the finals of the tournament.  Sophmore Kyle Dake ran his record to 30-0, and captured his third consecutive IAC title beating Tioga's Derak Heyman 2-0 at the 112# weight class, and also received the tournaments most outstanding wrestler award.  Both wrestlers are currently ranked in the top 5 in the state at 112 pounds.

Freshman 140 pounder Jon Glennon put together a fine tournament beating Waverly's returning IAC champion Justin Wolcott in the semi-final 4-2, and pinning Marathon's Kasey Bush in the finals, avenging two early season losses respectively.

Senior Jeremy Petak broke school record in the pole vault with a vault of 13'0". He barely missed qualifying for the Indoor National Meet, which teammate Carol Melice has already qualified for. Senior Rusty Landon tied the school record in the 300 meter with a time of 36.7 seconds to finish 3rd place.

posticon Track Team Strong Results at Cornell

The team did really well at this past meet. We had a school record set in the shot put relay with the combined total of 94'10.5" by Sophmore Jeff Swayze and Senior Andy Lockwood. Seniors Ken Tillapaugh and Carol Melice also doubled up by placing in both of their events. Tillapaugh took two thirds by placing in the 55 meter dash and long jump, while Melice took two firsts in the 55 meter dash and pole vault.

posticon Shooting Stars Win Skantown Showdown

The Ithaca 14U Shooting Stars girls hockey team won the Skantown Showdown Tournament Jan. 6-7 in Skaneateles, while the 16Us played two games that ended in tie scores, and the 19Us won two.

The 14Us won two games and lost one in preliminary action to advance to the championship game against the host Skaneateles Lakers. Regulation play ended in a 2-2 tie but Ithaca won the shootout which followed a scoreless overtime period to be the tournament champions. Goals were scored by Melissa Ash and Carrie Wilder. Assists were made by Wilder, Lauren Herrick and Lucy Marshall. Meredith Kirk was the shooter who broke the tie during the shootout.

posticon Lansing Varsity Bowlers Maintain Wins

Both Bobcat teams maintained their pace Tuesday in the IAC taking all four points each from Watkins Glen. On the Boys side Phil Kulis led the way with a fine 257/686 followed by Kyle Christopher225/614, Tyler Clark 213/590 and Dan Baldini 227/581. A total team effect was recorded in the win, as Lukas Buckman had a 593 series for Watkins.

On the Girls side the Lady Bobcats were led by Kristi Sullivan 183/480 as all five starters had 400 series or better. Both teams will not see action until 1-27-07 at the Big House in Elmira as next week is regents & midterm week.

posticon Lansing Wrestlers Do Well in Tournament

The Lansing Wrestling team competed in The Mike Watson Invitational Tournament last weekend, finishing in a suprising 3rd place as a team.  "We had 5 wrestlers in the semi-finals and four made it to the finals".  Kyle Dake improved his record to 27-0 pinning Cody Budd of South Seneca in the finals at 112, Jon Glennon had a major decision in the 140 weight class beating Justin Hall of Odessa-Montour 12-2.

Vernon Nabinger,wrestling at 135, lost a tough match 6-4 in overtime to Jon Roberts from Rush-Henretta. Matt Starner made it to the first final of his career in the 152 pound bracket, but fell short of the title losing to Brian Thall of Waverly. Curtis Fenner lost a tough match in the semi-finals at 145, to Don Bower from Corning. Curtis was dominating the match 7-0 when Bower hit a head-lock and pinned Fenner. Curt wrestled back and took 3rd avenging a earlier season loss to Waverly's Zack McCutheon. Matt Martin wrestled hard and rounded out the Bobcat placers taking 5th at 160.
