The April 29th deadline is approaching for getting your discounted season Greek Peak pass through the Lansing Recreation Program.  While you don't need to get the pass through the Rec Department to participate in the popular winter program, Recreation Director Steve Colt says it's a great deal, more than $100 off the cost if you buy it after the deadline.  "We have a huge turnout for our ski program," Colt says.  "It's one of our biggest programs that runs through K to 12.  It's a pretty substantial savings"

The first two weeks of this year's ski program were canceled due to warm  weather, and then the fourth week was canceled when it was too cold.  But the Rec Department made them up on the other end of the schedule.  "It was a tale of two winters," Colt says.  "Normally we start the second week in January, the Monday after the school break.  But we finally did get it all in."

Colt says that you can get a program pass for the six Monday nights of the department's ski program only, but that the season pass pays for itself.  "We have figured out that if you buy a season's pass you only have to go about six times to pay off the value of what you payed for," he says.  "Most of our kids go six times with us, and they go at least that many times with their friends during more peak times, so it's a good value."

Other programs include Yoga and Cardio Step classes for adults.  These are ongoing programs, but Colt says you can join at any time.  "Most people want to jump in at the beginning, but if it's something that you want to explore you can try it and pay a pro-rated fee," he says.  "More often than not they really like it," he says.

The department is also offering a couple of horseback riding programs at Finale Farm this Spring.  The programs begin in mid-April with one running nine weeks and the others 10 weeks.  The programs are for beginning riders as well as more experienced ones.  "People should refer to the flyers to get the details, or refer to our great new Web site," Colt says.

And that's the other Rec Department news.  The new site is located at www.LansingRec.com, and has flyers and information about current programs.  Cancellations and last minute information is also being posted to the site.  "We've taken a lot of complements on it," Colt says.  "I'll be going to our regional rec coordinator's meeting next Friday at the Youth Bureau downtown, and one of the agenda items is regarding Web pages.  I'll be doing a lot of bragging that day!"

Colt says that the booklet listing summer programs is due in May, and it will also be posted on the site.  Additionally he says that all the 'Concert in the Park' dates are confirmed with headliners including The Ithaca Concert Band, New Orleans All-Star Jazz Band, The Ageless Jazz Band, Don Barber and the Dukes, Symphonic Steel Band, The Joe Cavallero Band, and the Backtalk Band.

He adds that the new bandstand being donated by the Lansing Lions Club may be ready for the concert series, if all goes well.  "The Lions Club has done a great job," Colt says.  "It really is a big undertaking, and probably one of the biggest that they've done in quite a while.  It's exciting."
