ttc_lori-white120Lori WhiteTompkins Trust Company and the Legacy Foundation announced that two area teachers were recognized with this year’s awards for their outstanding efforts to improve education in their districts.  This year’s recipients are Kim Slocum of Groton Junior/Senior High School and Lori White of Newfield Middle School.

Kim Slocum was honored for her work in education at the Groton Junior/Senior High School and has been teaching math for 15 years. Kim is able to motivate the most challenging students, the most highly motivated, and everyone in between.  She truly has a passion for her job, and really enjoys her students.

Lori White was honored for her years of service to Newfield Middle School.  Lori has been teaching English Language Arts in the district for 30 years.  Not only is she an English teacher, Lori is also the Director of the Newfield Trojan Masquers, the High School Drama Department.  Lori has made a lasting impression on all who know her, whether she was most recently their teacher, drama director, mentor or colleague.

Tompkins Trust Company established the Raymond Van Houtte Teacher Award in 1989 to honor the late Raymond Van Houtte, retired president of the Trust Company.  It consists of a $25,000 endowment administered by the Legacy Foundation. Earnings on the endowment are used to fund awards to educators who have shown exceptional ability, effort, and results in improving primary and secondary education in Tompkins County. Educators are nominated by individuals, principals, or district superintendents.
