October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and The Pilates Room of Ithaca plans to donate part of its proceeds for the month to the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes (formerly known as the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance)

Specifically, The Pilates Room will be donating all October proceeds from its "mat classes" to the Cancer Resource Center. "Mat classes" are one of several types of classes The Pilates Room offers and are designed for everyone from beginners to advanced students. With more than 35 of these classes scheduled in October, and a location in the Island Health and Fitness Center, The Pilates Room will also be asking its many clients to consider making an additional small contribution to the Cancer Resource Center.

The Pilates Room of Ithaca is a locally owned and operated business. Pilates is a mind and body-conditioning program that uses non-impact exercise to help men, women and children of all fitness levels develop core strength and graceful, efficient body movement. The emphasis on both mind and body makes Pilates an outstanding conditioning program for people in physical or emotional rehabilitation, including those who've been diagnosed with, or have gone through any type of cancer treatment, including surgery.

Statistics from the New York State Cancer Registry indicate that approximately 54 women in Tompkins County are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and that it claims the lives of nine of them.

The Pilates Room co-owner and director Tori Brown says, ""We want to do our part during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by offering classes and information with regard to how cancer survivors can support and empower themselves. Medical advances have allowed more men and women to survive breast cancer than ever before. We thought we could do an even better public service by supporting an organization that offers assistance and support for anyone affected by any form of cancer. Our natural choice was to collect funds for The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes."

Shawn Galbraith, the Executive Director of the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, says, "The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes is thrilled that the Pilates Room is donating a part of its proceeds to us in the month of October. We're very grateful to members of the wellness community, such as the Pilates Room, who want to help support people with cancer in Tompkins County."

The Pilates Room of Ithaca is locally owned and operated by Brown and co-owner Chemine Montivero-Cole. Both hold multiple certifications in Pilates instruction. The Pilates Room offers both private and group classes. Proceeds from October's private "mat classes" are included in the donation to The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes. In addition to mat classes, The Pilates Room of Ithaca also offers a Pilates-based resistance training or Reformer class, and AqualatesÒ, which use the same principles as Pilates, but is modified for an aquatic environment.
