crs120One of England's most famous ships will dock in Ithaca this summer. Triphammer Arts is pleased to present Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore (The Lass that Loved a Sailor) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 5, 6, and 7, 2016 at 7:00pm at the CRS Barn Studio's outdoor space.

The Triphammer Arts production takes a fresh, lively, and family-friendly approach to this beloved Gilbert and Sullivan work, using both the building and the grounds of the CRS Barn Studio. The talented cast features professional singers from Central New York and beyond, including Carl Johengen as the incomparable Sir Joseph Porter KCB, Steven Stull as the beleaguered Captain Corcoran, Rebecca Leistikow as his rebellious daughter Josephine, Dan Bates as her 'lowly suitor,' and David Neal as the despicable Dick Dead Eye who does his best to foil their romantic plans.

Dana Kinney sings the role of Buttercup, the kindly but somewhat absent-minded peddler, while Robin Booth plays Sir Joseph's Cousin Hebe, and Eric Angerhofer portrays the Boatswain. All are supported by a local chorus of sailors, as well as Sir Joseph's sisters, cousins, and aunts. The production is directed and choreographed by CRS Barn Studio founders Steven Stull and Jeanne Goddard, with music direction by Richard Montgomery and accompaniment by Mr. Montgomery and William Cowdery.

Following its 1878 premier HMS Pinafore was so wildly popular that scholars estimate there were at least eight 'illegal' versions of the piece on stage throughout the U.S. before Gilbert could get across the Atlantic to direct the first authorized production in New York City - with British stars and an American chorus. High schools, colleges, community theatre groups and professional opera companies continue to delight audiences with such memorable tunes as 'We sail the ocean blue' and 'For he is an Englishman.'
