school_high120Kathy Rourke, was unanimously approved to be hired as Lansing's Director of Special Services and Grants by the Board of Education at their November 22 meeting.  Rourke has 28 years of teaching and administrative work in Ithaca and Marathon.  She is currently Chairperson of the Special Education Department at Ithaca High School in the Ithaca City School District.  In that position she supervises 30 staff positions.

She was chosen from among 30 applicants from districts in New york, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.  Rourke is currently a Lansing resident.  Applicants were screened by teachers and administrators, with successful candidates being interviewed by parents, administrators, and school board members.  Administrators used a  'Fit Mapping Analysis' to help inform their choice.

"References for Ms. Rourke commented on her love of children and passion for ensuring that all children are given the opportunity for an outstanding educational experience," says Superintendent Stephen Grimm in a letter to district residents.  "They were also impressed with her instructional knowledge, systems of communication, and her ability to collaborate with colleagues and families to support children and positive change."

She will officially begin her position on January 1, 2011.
