ImageNational Public Radio airs a weekly radio show hosted by Garrison Keeler, called Prairie Home Companion. The show blends a mix of musical talent, on air acting, and story telling. In one segment of the show, Garrison recaps the week's events in his hometown, the mythical Lake Woebegone. Perhaps the most endearing part of the story is the closing phrase, "And that's the news from my hometown where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

That simple phrase seems to describe our town of Lansing as well. The people of this town have accomplished a remarkable amount of work in the past six months. At every level and in every sector of our community, men and women have achieved honors and success by putting forth their best efforts to improve the quality of life for all.

The Lansing Schools are an ideal place to begin. Students and faculty, assisted by members of the community, produced some spectacular musicals this spring. Athletes and their coaches demonstrated their skill and agility both at the local and state level bringing home honors in both boys and girls sports. Graduation ceremonies reminded us that our young men and women will take what they have learned from their parents, teachers, pastors, and community leaders to the next adventure in life whether it be college, work, or travel abroad.

Our elected officials appear to be doing their jobs with diligence and fiscal responsibility. Ball fields are in good shape. Roads are well maintained. The parks look great, and the Concert in the Park Series is underway. Perhaps our local officials could offer our state legislatures a few lessons on civility and responsibility. New York State's budget is three months late, with little hope of any cooperation among law makers in Albany.

What is most remarkable about our town is the spirit of community. There is a real esprit de corps among many residents. From the recent Art Show and the Farmers Market at the Town Hall to the reconstruction of the North Log Cabin and completion of a new playground at Myers Park, the residents have demonstrated a real commitment to improving the quality of life Lansing.

While some may offer a different opinion about Lansing Schools, Town Board, and community organizations, I salute each and every individual who puts forth the effort to improve our way of life. Ordinary folks performing extraordinary works are what make our town such a vital part of America. On this 4th of July weekend, as we enjoy a stroll around the Farmers Market or Myers Park, take a moment and thank those who made it happen. And that is to the point.
