mailmanThanks for last week's interesting articles about the Cargill Salt Mine! With regard to Cargill giving money to good works in the surrounding community, it should be noted that over 10 years ago,the company gave a generous donation to the fledgling Lansing Community Library. This gift helped to kick-start the renovation and addition work on the library building. Because of generous companies like Cargill, as well as other community-builders like foundations, NYS agencies, and many individuals, Lansing now enjoys a fully renovated, enlarged, and re-purposed historical building that is completely paid for.

In 2009, the Cargill company, was asked by the Friends of the Lansing Library Program Committee to give a talk about mining operations. The company Engineers eagerly worked with the library committee and they and other Cargill employees gave a lively and interesting evening presentation about how the salt mine works. They brought along equipment and lots of pictures to entertain and inform the 83 people who attended. A lively camaraderie that developed between the group from the mine and the audience members seemed to illustrate the pride many Lansingites have in their local "heavy" industry. As industries go, it certainly is an interesting one!
