Tompkins Girls Hockey Association Open House Scheduled October 30

Girls of all ages are invited by Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA) to two upcoming events introducing girls to ice hockey on Monday, October 23 and Monday, October 30.

"Try Girls Hockey" is a special free event planned for October 23 at 6:30 p.m. October 30 at 6:30 p.m. is the annual Open House when new girls who are thinking of joining TGHA this season get together with those who already play girls ice hockey. Both will occur at The RINK, 1767 East Shore Drive, north of Ithaca.

On October 23, TGHA coaches and players will be on hand to introduce girls and their parents to the sport before they go on the ice. Free skate rentals will be available and there will be hockey equipment to borrow for the evening. Fun activities are planned to help them get a feel for playing hockey before deciding to start in TGHA's Initiation program for beginners. "Try Girls Ice Hockey" is scheduled for 6:30-8:00 p.m.

"Open House" is the traditional kickoff (or face off!) for the TGHA year. New and continuing skaters participate in this social event from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on October 30 which features a special on-ice welcome to new members as well as off-ice games, speeches, door prizes and refreshments! Skate rentals are free. No one wears full hockey equipment for Open House, but there will be information about the necessary equipment for beginners who will have their first practice on Thursday, Nov. 2.

TGHA offers a progression of instructional and competitive experiences beginning with Initiation (offered once or twice a week for girls ages 4 and up). Girls then advance to the House League after one or more years in Initiation. After developing basic skills in Initiation and House, some girls choose to join a travel team at the 12U, 14U, 16U or 19U age level. Girls who are not interested in playing on an Ithaca Shooting Stars travel team can participate in recreational hockeyl. Some become coaches or referees as well.

TGHA offers scholarships and operates a used equipment loan program. New TGHA members benefit from the special mentoring program called 'Cub Club'. The Cornell Women's Hockey team are "Big Red Sisters" to the youngest girls hockey players in the "Cub Club". Members of the Cornell team participate in the October events, too.
