More than 1,200 competitors and spectators will converge on Cortland this weekend when the Cortland YMCA Stingers Swim Team hosts the prestigious New York State Swimming Championships.

The event takes place Friday-Sunday, March 16-18, at the Park Center Holsten Pool on the SUNY Cortland campus.

Competition begins Friday evening with qualifying events and continues on Saturday and Sunday with the heats and finals in each class. A complete meet schedule will be available on the Web at http://www.thestingers.org/ or http://www.cortlandsports.org/.

"This meet will feature some of the best swimming talent in New York State," said Nick Pizzola, the meet director.

The Cortland Regional Sports Council (CRSC) and the Cortland Convention and Visitor's Bureau have prepared a visitors’ brochure that lists area restaurants, shopping locations and other things to do while in Cortland.

"It is a privilege for the Cortland community to play a role in hosting this event,” explained Machell Phelps, the CRSC excutive director. “Competition from other cities to hold such a large event as this one is increasing. We all need to be aware of the magnitude of these championships, their economic impact on the county, and the continued commitment needed to attract and support future sporting events in Cortland County.”
