ImageJunior’s Jeff Swayze and Matt Hartz had solid days in the field for Lansing HS this past Saturday at the Waverly Invitational, held Saturday, April 26th, at Waverly High School.

In a meet compiled mostly of Class A and AA schools, the duo tossed personal best marks in the Discus, with Swayze outdistancing Hartz by one inch.  Both heaving personal best attempts of 130’ 4” and 130’ 3” respectively.  They placed 2nd and 3rd in the event.  They will be heavily relied upon in the Disc during league competition.

In a season where it seems he can’t stop throwing personal best attempts, Swayze continues to make a name for himself in the Section 4 Shot Put.  His launch of 53’ 0” is a now not only a State Level qualifying attempt, but also makes him a force for placing in the Federations (Public and Catholic schools combined) this June.  He has worked diligently with his throwing coach and continues to gain confidence and strength meet by meet.

Brother’s Eddy Potter (3200m Run) and Henry Potter also had strong days on the track, with Henry, placing 5th in the 110m High Hurdles in the most competitive field he has seen yet.  Sophomore, Josh Barber, continues to impress as he placed 3rd in the 3000m Steeplechase in a season debut and personal best time of 10:46.9.  Barber will continue to work on this event in chase of Newark Valley rival Joe Blazey for state meet qualifying honors.

Sophomore Chloe Ryan had a busy day for Lansing girls.  The multi-talented sprinter/jumper placed 4th in the 100m, 5th in the 200m, and 4th in the Long Jump in a field of strong Binghamton and Pennsylvania schools.

Senior Ryann Cretney (2000m Steeplechase) and Junior Anna Mapes (400m Dash) also had nice comeback performances as Cretney continues to re-gain strength from taking some time off for Spring Break (Guatemala) and Mapes rehabbing from a sore calf muscle.  Cretney will join fellow Lansing Steeplechaser Josh Barber, next Monday night for the Cornwall Steeplechasefest downstate in New Windsor, NY.  This meet will be a preview of the State Championships in June as it will possess some of the top NYS as well as National runners in the country.

Lansing Varsity Track and Field competed in the tri meet vs. Newark Valley and Dryden, held Tuesday, April 22nd at Dryden High School.

Depth hurt Lansing's  in this season opening meet.  On the girl’s side, we could not match the strength of Newark Valley’s distance program and Dryden’s middle distance program.  Our numbers are ok in these events; we just are not physically ready at this point in April.  Spring break did not allow the entire team to practice together as some kids hadn’t raced in over 3 weeks.  We ran extremely well in the sprints and had solid efforts in the field, but it just wasn’t enough.  We simply ran out of gas.  Credit the girls for giving a 100% in probably one of the toughest league meets this program has faced in years.

With our boy’s we knew Newark Valley’s distance kids were Class C State Cross Country Champions this past fall and the heart of their team.  We did a great job breaking up their top guys matching them point for point with our standouts as we cruised by them on the swift strides of Eddy Potter, Henry Potter (won 4 events) and Josh Barber in 800m and up.

However, with Dryden, we managed to struggle against their powerhouse sprint and jump programs.  They have been good for years in these events and we simply just do not have the numbers.  Ken Tillapaugh and Dan Ravis did a great job all day battling their sprinters.

Junior Jeff Swayze also had a strong day for Lansing as he continues to set a personal best each meet he enters.  His toss of 51’ 11.25” was good enough to qualify him for the State Track and Field Championships this June at the University of Buffalo.

Freshman Kathryn Hornibrook was a double winner in the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles against some strong IAC competition.  These are both events she is new to and continues to make herself a dominant force in Section 4.

Senior Carol Melice also had a solid day as she won the pole vault over friend and rival Tara Brenner from Dryden.  She also anchored our 4 x 100m relay not at full strength as she replaced Junior Anna Mapes for the day who has been nursing a sore calf muscle for the past month.  It was a great showing by Carol and showed a great sense of Senior leadership.

Girls record is now (0-2)
Boys record is now (1-1)

Lansing shot putter Swayze continued to build on his successful outdoor track season at the Red, White, Blue, Gold Invitational at Vestal High School on April 17.  The meet was hosted by Newark Valley and Maine-Endwell’s track programs.

The talented Junior tossed yet another personal best, this past Saturday, launching a 51’ 10” throw to win the shot put competition.  This victory is his 3rd in 3 invitational’s this spring.  Swayze also placed 4th in the Discus, with a 117’ 4.50” mark.

On the track Lansing freshman Robin Hicks had a solid day in the 400m and 800m (61.0 and 2:23.4) runs in 80 degree heat.  Showing a strong finishing kick in both events, this newcomer showed some major promise and looks like he may be able to contribute to this program for some years to come.

Lansing girls also ran well in limited action with Kathryn Hornibrook, Lindsay Petry and Carol Melice looking in top form in the sprints and Pole Vault and Christine Fuchs in the 800m run.
