Gerda struggled with adjusting to life at the SPCA, reports Jim Bouderau, executive director: “Gerda is a big dog, weighing in at 72 pounds. She is not accustomed to meeting new people and she is uncomfortable with handling. You can imagine how hard it was going to be for us to find her a new home!”
The SPCA searched for a reputable rescue group with breed specific experience. Bouderau said: “Not only were we looking for a rescue group that specifically understands a Doberman’s nature, we needed to make sure the rescue group had excellent credentials and was very reputable. We did our homework and found Doberman Rescue Unlimited in New Hampshire, and we were additionally thrilled to learn that they had a space for Gerda.”
The SPCA’s next challenge was figuring out how to transport Gerda to New Hampshire. A local businessman, animal lover and supporter of the SPCA helped out by flying Gerda to New Hampshire on Wednesday in a round trip that covered 700 miles in just about three hours.
Bouderau said: “We are so grateful for this astonishing generosity, and we wish Gerda the best for a wonderful new life in New England.”
