The Lansing Board of Education thanked 5th grader Diva Shrivastava for winning a competition that awarded $500 to her school.  Shrivastava placed first in the Ithaca round  in the Mathnasium of Ithaca local TriMathlon.  She placed second nationally, resulting in a $500 check that was presented to the school board Monday..

"A top national TriMathlon finish is no easy task, as Diva was up against the winners in her grade level from more than 200 Mathnasium locations," said Mathnasium of Ithaca franchise owner Ewan Barr.

Each participant received a gift for participating, and winners earned donations for their schools.

Barr joined Shrivastava and her family at the school board meeting, where they were thanked by the board for their contribution to the Lansing school district.  In addition to the $500 check the local franchise donated a scholarship for the 2013/14 school year for a needy student.

In the Ithaca competition Shrivastava earned a perfect score, which qualified her for the national competition.  She scored second place among 773 5th graders in the national tie-breaker.

The TriMathlon tests students in three challenges: The Counting Game, the Magic Squares Challenge, and Mental Math Workout.  Questions become increasingly more difficult.  Mathnasium made a contribution on DonorChoose.org for each correct answer, which funded the checks to schools.  More than 3,000 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in public, private, or home schools participated in the TriMathlon across the United States and Canada.


Local winners received a certificate, a medal (gold, silver or bronze) and a gift: a Rubik's Cube for first place winners, a Lakeshore gift card for second place, and Smarties prize packs for third.  On the national level Shrivastava won a trophy, $500 for her school and a $50 Lakeshore gift card for her second place win.
