Lansing High School’s National Honor Society club volunteered at the Lansing Food Pantry on Sunday, January 26, organizing tables of food and helping prepare for the food distribution the next day. Members unloaded freezers, stacked cans of vegetables and fruit, sorted boxes of nonperishable food, and loaded grocery carts and bags for families.
The Lansing Food Pantry, one of sixteen pantries in the Tompkins County Distribution Network, served roughly 94 families in December and fed almost 304 people. 89 were children, 165 adults, and 50 seniors.
It receives an annual budget of around $5,000 from the Lansing Community Council, but costs about $1,000 a month to run. The additional funding comes from food and monetary donations from people and businesses in the community.
With the help of 13 NHS members, the pantry was set up in roughly an hour and a half—in roughly one fifth of the usual preparation time. NHS will continue its work with the Lansing Food Pantry.
