Residents simply place their brush and limbs by the roadside before the first pickup day. The Town picks up the brush and puts it through a chipper, which creates mulch that is made available to individuals for free. It is important to follow the department's guidelines if you want brush picked up:

"The Town gives away the mulch," Highway Superintendent Jack French. " We've got a huge pile up here behind the shop." Individuals can just take it from the pile at the Highway Department building on Town Barn Road. The mulch is not available to commercial companies. French says it is only for individuals.
French says the Town has had an arrangement with Tompkins County that produces more mulch than is generated by the pickup. "We allow the county to dump brush, and they pay for a chipper to chip it up," he says. Because of this Lansing has allowed any county resident to take mulch from the pile. But French says the County may use their brush for a project at the Cayuga Nature Center next year. If this happens only Lansing residents will be eligible for the free mulch.
