stjohnsithacaSt. John's Church, Ithaca proudly announces that it has appointed Karen Hindenlang as Organist and Director of Music.  In addition to producing magnificent music from St. John's historic organ, Hindenlang will direct the church's Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, and Children's Choir.

Hindenlang has earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Wells College.  She also has studied at Cornell University, Westminster Choir College and the Choate Organ Institute.  She taught music history at University of Rochester and Colgate University and designed a music program for students K-8 in a private school in Auburn, NY where she taught for nearly 20 years.

Hindenlang has lived in upstate NY for decades and in Aurora, NY with her husband for more than 30 years.

When asked what about her job is important to her, she said:   "I believe that singing is an innate expression of God’s gift of music.  I’ve always sung in choirs, and began conducting choral groups as an undergraduate.  I am a collaborative musician, most comfortable working with others. I don’t have the temperament of a recitalist, the soloist mentality.  I greatly value being part of something bigger than myself, contributing to a greater whole.  Helping to raise the collective voice of a congregation and its choir in worship is one of my greatest joys. "

During July-August, St. John’s Summer Choir has been singing each week at the 10:30 am Sunday service.  The Summer Choir, a longstanding tradition at St. John’s, is a pick-up choir which works with minimal rehearsal, offering easy anthems enhanced by part-singing, bells, free organ accompaniments and a cappella harmony.

St. John’s Chancel Choir warmly welcomes new members this fall beginning with rehearsal on September 4 at 7:00 pm at St. John’s Church, located at 210 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca.
