sierra_120Often after the pageantry of the Lansing High School Commencement a quieter graduation takes place in August for students who have taken longer to earn their degrees.  Four students were honored Monday for their persistance in earning their high school diplomas even when it took a little longer to do so.  Sierra Boles, Christopher Emley, Andrew Reakes and Zairien Weeks joined the Class of 2014 in August and were celebrated at Monday's Board of Education Meeting.

"We want to make sure that we celebrate our graduates," said Superintendent Chris Pettograsso.  "Sierra completed earning her Regent's Diploma this summer.  She is currently attending college at TC3 where she is playing softball.  Superintendent Chris Pettograsso said that some of the other students are joining the workforce, while others are also attending TC3."

Sierra Boles was the only one of the four who was able to attend.  She officially received her diploma from Lansing High School Principal Colleen Ledley, while her Mother, a school board member, watched happily.  The board took a break to celebrate with cake and punch.

"I want to congratulate Sierra for her persistance," Ledley said.  "This young lady is amazing.  She never gave up.  She held her head high.  She really is what we define as grit, and in the educational world that is really about persistance and having the confidence and hard work and ethic to keep going."

"I remember telling her if she graduates in August I would be there to congratulate her," said Lansing High School Guidance Counselor Megan Conaway.  "She has been an amazing student to work with, and her parents as well.  I want to congratulate her for all her hard work."

"My heart goes out to you," Ledley said.  "I am so proud of you. I know (Director of Special Services Kathy Rourke) is proud of you.  I know your family is proud of you."
