Food Scraps Drop SpotThe Tompkins County Solid Waste Division, in partnership with the Village of Cayuga Heights, announced the opening of a food scrap recycling drop spot at 836 Hanshaw Road.

The new drop spot at the village offices at Community Corners will be open every Sunday beginning June 7th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The free service will allow residents to expand their recycling options and reduce their trash disposal costs.

The material collected each week will be taken to Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg for processing, with the resulting compost marketed to farmers, landscapers and homeowners as a soil amendment.

The Solid Waste Division offers free kitchen caddies, transport containers and compostable bags to encourage residents to participate.

Food Scrap Recycling Drop Spots are also located at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center in Ithaca, at Cayuga Compost on Agard Road, at the Dryden Town Highway Department and Lansing Village Office (Saturdays only) and at Cornell Cooperative Extension on Willow Avenue in Ithaca (Sundays only).

Staff will be on hand each week at the drop spot to answer questions and provide written material about the benefits of food scrap recycling. Residents will also find a supply of replacement compostable bags, as well as caddies and transportation containers for users new to the program.
