A utility building arrived on Conlon Road Wednesday (06/14/06) as workmen continue to install a new cell tower.  The 35 ton building was trucked to the site, then lowered onto a concrete slab by crane.  Although the cell tower is being constructed by Cingular Wireless, Nextel will be the first wireless company to install equipment on the facility.

Cingular holds a 25 year lease with resident Mary Searles, who owns the farm where the tower is located.  It is located in a field near the intersection of Searles and Conlon Roads.  Once a tower is constructed it is common for other wireless companies to co-locate their equipment on it.

The building backs onto the site Wednesday morning

The Lansing Town Board approved construction of the 190' tower last July after a seven month process during which a Cingular representative frustrated the Board when he failed to provide information and certifications they requested.  Town Supervisor Steve Farkas says that now that the tower is being constructed he hopes other companies such as Verizon Wireless will also locate on the tower.  He says that will provide better service to the Lansing community without littering the countryside with multiple towers.

Workmen say that the tower itself will be arriving next week.  It will take a few days to assemble it before it is raised in sections on three concrete footings that were installed over the past few weeks.  Meanwhile grounding and utility wires have been installed at the site.  Workmen hooked up ground wires to the building Wednesday afternoon.
