The Town of Lansing collected 3,200 tires on its tire drop-off day last Saturday (6/24).  The Town held the drop-off day to make it convenient for New York State residents to legally dispose of old tires, as well as pick up some cash.  The Tompkins County Soil And Water Conservation District sponsored the event along with the Town Higway Department, collecting $1.00 per standard auto and pickup truck tires and $2.00 for larger tires.

The Town Highway Department got 25 cents per tire, netting $760 for the day.  They were not paid for tires people had dumped around town, but the Department picked them up anyway.  This week the Town hauled all the tires to Nucor Steel in Auburn.  Nucor uses the tires in steel production, recycling everything of value including the carbon, energy and the steel.  They produce Rebar, merchant bar quality rounds, squares flats, angles and channels.  The steel they produce has 99% recycled content.

The Highway Department took 42 loads of tires to Auburn.  Using four drivers and four 10 wheeler trucks, it took two and a half days to get all the tires delivered.  A fifth man ran the loader to get the tires onto the trucks.  The last load was delivered just before noon Wednesday.
