Archive: Around Town

Dear Margaret: I've been working for a company for five years and have many times provided a vision for their future growth. The powers that be often take my suggestions, but always lean towards the conservative side. I've found myself limiting the scope of what I present to them to make the direction more palatable. It frankly feels awful. I'm finding that I now do this in my everyday life. That is, I compromise my full visions to make them acceptable to others. It's a cycle I'm having trouble breaking. Any suggestions?
Limiting Myself

Dear Limiting Myself: First of all, kudos to you for having the self-awareness that you are essentially sabotaging yourself. There is a time and place for politics, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you can dole out your ideas at work, or other parts of your life, in bite-sized pieces until your full vision is realized, perhaps that is the way to go. You're getting what you desire that way, but the timing is different. Use your awareness/intuition further to determine how much and when to put forth your ideas. They key is to not stifle yourself. An artist of any kind knows when the project is complete. One more brush stroke can often ruin a painting. Treat your visions similarly.
