YMCA
The YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County and Foodnet are partnering to bring Foodnet's congregate meal program to the YMCA three days a week. Starting on Monday, November 6, 2017, the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County will host one of Foodnet's social dining sites on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am-1:30pm.

Teresa Morehouse, associate executive director of the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County says, "Hosting a Foodnet congregate meal site complements the Y's commitment to strengthening community; we know that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together."

According to Jessica Gosa, executive director of Foodnet Meals on Wheels, "A collaborative effort to bring a nutritious dining opportunity to the YMCA aligns well with both organizations' commitment to older adults in the community."

In addition to the YMCA, Foodnet currently offers weekday lunches at several locations in the community, including Titus Towers, Center Village Court, and First Baptist Church in Trumansburg. The program is available to community older adults who would benefit from a nutritious meal. Anyone 60 years of age and over is eligible to participate; spouses can also receive the meal regardless of age. Individuals under the age of 60 can receive the meal at full cost ($8.00 per meal) or with private insurance. Foodnet encourages individuals age 60 and over to make a contribution towards their meals if they are able, but no one will ever be turned away because of inability to pay.

Research tells us that social dining has health benefits similar to those of exercise. Each of the meal locations offers healthy meals, socializing, nutrition education, and volunteer opportunities. While a Y membership is not required to join the social dining program, there are wonderful offerings available for older adults. Memberships are free for individuals over the age of 85, and every Thursday the YMCA offers Dollar Day for seniors age 60 and over.
