Dear Margaret: This is the time of year when there are lots of parties where I'm expected to make an appearance, and I am so introverted that it's painful! I'm beginning to dread the holidays for this reason. I'm perfectly comfortable with family gatherings, but work parties make me uncomfortable. Any tips on how to get over the dread of holiday parties?

Dear Saddened by Addiction: You're not alone! Many people are shy and/or introverted and being in large groups for them is agonizing. Here are a few tips. Make sure there are one or two people attending the party that you're comfortable with, and spend some of the time with them. Another tip might be to put in an appearance for an acceptable time, which you've predetermined, and then stick to that exit strategy. If you're the type of person who gets recharged only when you're in solitude, be sure you've recharged before attending an event. Seek out someone who seems to enjoy an audience, and join that group of people at the party. They need listeners! Or, you could be sure to find an assignment prior to the party, such as helping with passing out food or taking photographs. Lastly, if it's not imperative that you attend, send your regrets and enjoy your solitude!
