Dear Margaret: I know others are dealing with this right now, but I'm finding in this particularly hostile political climate I'm losing some close friends and family, particularly my sister. We can barely get together without a bitter, partisan discussion ensuing. Do I really have to lose friends and family over politics? How can I be true to my values and still engage in meaningful discussion with those I care about?
Politically Exhausted
Dear Politically Exhausted: Yes, many others are dealing with the same issue. Let's take the situation with your sister, for instance. First of all, is this a relationship you'd like to continue? If yes, then let her know you'd prefer keeping politics out of your socializing. You must have so many other points of connection where you agree, wonderful memories to share, and common values. And don't make her out to be a bad person. I'm finding people are taking extreme comfort in the comradery of like-minded political allies to the point they become extremely tribal. Perhaps the more fragile the ego, the more staunchly some individuals take unwavering sides. She may be finding much needed comfort in this type of bonding, as painful as that may be for you. Find compassion within yourself, hold fast to your own boundaries of self-respect, and try to be nonjudgmental. If you need to see a bit less of her for a while, that might be a good idea.
