Lansing's Board Of Education (BOE) voted 4/0 to approve the appointment of James 'Jamie' Thomas as Lansing Middle School Principal.  This made it official after Thomas became the top candidate in a search this summer after John Gizzi left the position.  Interviews were conducted by administrators, teachers, parents and students, involving about 60 members of the Lansing community.

With Thomas's appointment the district almost has a complete permanent team in place.  After several so-called permanent and interim superintendents in and out over more than five years, Mark Lewis was came to that post in January.  Since then Larry Lawrence was hired to fill the Business Administrator post after a succession of interims in that position.  Both Lawrence and Thomas started work August first.

That just leaves the Elementary School Principal position, currently filled by Interim Principal Earlene Carr.  Lewis says that a search will be initiated next February, a typical time of year to begin such a process.  Assuming this team of administrators stays, they should lend much needed stability.  The district has already seen some benefits with a long range strategic plan in place that takes the district through 2009.

Thomas grew up in Webster, NY and earned his undergraduate degree at Wooster College in Ohio, then was awarded a graduate assistantship in anatomy and physiology at Ithaca College, where he also served as the Assistant Lacrosse Coach.  He has taught biology and physical science at Boynton Middle Schooland Ithaca High School.  He served as science department chair, high school varsity lacrosse coach and taught summer school science classes, as well as tutoring math and science and teaching SAT preparation classes.  In 2002 he became Associate Principal of Boynton for the 2002-2003 school year, then was awarded the same position at Dewitt Middle School, where he served for three years, receiving administrative tenure last April.

"I'd like to officially welcome you to Lansing," said School Board President Bonita Lindberg after a unanimous vote to hire Thomas.  "We certainly look forward to a long tenure.  I was very pleased with the comments that came out of the interview groups.  You have impressed lots of people and I look forward to working with you.  Welcome aboard."
