As the annual Watchfire Ceremony at Myers Park approaches, local Boy Scout Jacob Searles is preparing to gift the Lansing community with his Eagle Service Project.Searles is a Senior at Lansing High School and a member of Troop 24 in Dryden. After realizing a need for folks to have a place to properly dispose of their old and worn out American Flags; Searles has created collection sites for members of the community to do just that.

Collection boxes will be available at Myers Park (near the main entrance) and at the entrance of the Lansing Town Hall starting Sunday September 9, 2018. Flags may be collected throughout the year, and will be respectfully and patriotically burned each fall in the Watchfire Ceremony.

Searles's twelve-year long scouting journey has brought him up through the ranks of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. The completion of his Eagle Project, as well as earning required merit badges, now qualifies Searles to receive scouting's highest rank, Eagle. Searles has held various leadership positions within his Troop, including Senior Patrol Leader. He is an active member of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout's Honor Society. Searles has spent the past two summers on staff at Camp Barton as a Merit Badge Instructor and Camp Counselor.

Searles's family is deeply rooted in Lansing. He says he is honored to be able to give back to a community that has offered him so much.
