dearmargaret On occasion, we get together with another couple in which the husband dominates the conversation and interrupts when someone else has the floor. We really do like them and don't want to shut them out of our lives, but this guy is getting to be hard to tolerate. Is there any way to resolve this and tactfully get him yield to others?
Tired of the Talker

Dear Tired of the Talker: If the 'interuptee' doesn't say anything, touch the offenders arm and quietly tell him to let the person finish. Do this consistently. If he has had the floor for an extraordinary amount of time, it is appropriate to hold up your hand and ask if anyone else in the room has thoughts they'd like to contribute to the conversation. Unless you take control, your talker friend is not going to let others participate in a conversation. If he gets offended, that's another conversation.
