dearmargaretDear Margaret: I work for a small office that is incredibly toxic. Employees gossip about each other, a few are bullies, and the boss picks favorites. Going to her, therefore, is out of the question. I need a job, and have been sending out resumes. If something doesn't turn up soon, I may have to consider going out on disability. It's really is that bad. I don't know what other options I have. It's making my life miserable. How can I cope with this situation without going to the extreme?
Trouble Coping

Dear Trouble Coping: I'm sorry to hear about this situation. First of all, make sure you try to remove yourself from the toxicity. Don't engage in gossip or any undermining of other employees. Be sure to take care of yourself off hours and, if possible, get out for a walk during lunch and breaks during office hours. Be sure to take your vacations. Do let the boss know what you are experiencing in the workplace, and take notes of the conversation in the event you need them in the future. Talk to your family doctor about your health concerns in the current work environment. If they think a break is advisable, follow their advice. Mental and emotional pain sooner or later manifests in physical ailments. You might consider talking to a career counselor. I hope these suggestions will be helpful for you. Please take care of yourself.
