The New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently named Ithaca High School a 2018-2019 Recognition School.

Recognition Schools are identified as high achieving and high progress under the state's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, the goals of which are to foster equity in education and expand measures for school support, school accountability and student success.

"We are taking a more holistic approach to school and student achievement under ESSA and I am excited to recognize these schools for their accomplishments and progress," said State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. "I commend the teachers, administrators, staff, parents and students for the hard work and dedication they bring each day—it is truly paying off."

The Recognition Schools were identified as such for having high academic achievement, student growth and graduation rates, and for having made progress in English language arts (ELA) and math performance, chronic absenteeism rates and college, career and civic readiness. All of the schools have also met the federally required 95 percent participation rate in ELA and math assessments.

In total, NYSED identified 562 Recognition Schools for 2018-2019. Of those, Ithaca is one of 234 high schools and one of 280 schools located outside of New York City.

"Ithaca High School is consistently receiving state and national recognitions for academic achievements," said Dr. Luvelle Brown, Superintendent of the Ithaca City School District. "It is an honor to work and learn with the students, staff and families associated with one of our nation's best secondary schools."
