Dr. Marianne Krasny, Director of the Civic Ecology Lab within the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University, was recognized by the North American for Environmental Education with the 2019 Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Education Research award.

Dr. Krasny's most notable contribution in 2019 was the development of the Cornell Climate Change Online Fellowship, which connects professionals from around the world to spur climate actions in their social networks. That built on her ongoing work at the Civic Ecology Lab, where she and her colleagues have created seven different online courses for environmental educators globally and continue to teach climate change science, communication and action.

"At Cornell, I am privileged to work with an impressive international group of graduate students, all of whom conduct engaged research in partnership with environmental educators working in the field," said Dr. Krasny. "Through our online courses and fellowships, we have expanded our community to encompass environmental educators working in over 60 countries globally."

Dr. Krasny and members of her Civic Ecology Lab conduct several projects that put research into practice. Current projects include enhancing social and place identities through civic ecology, studying litter cleanups as civic ecology practices and analyzing the impacts of global online learning platforms. She has also authored books with environmental educators in the field, such as Grassroots to Global: Broader Impacts of Civic Ecology and serves as editor of the environmental education book series by Cornell University Press. Her next book in the series, Advancing Environmental Education Practice, comes out in February 2010.

"Marianne Krasny has been at the forefront of environmental education research and practice for more than two decades," said Judy Braus, Executive Director of NAAEE. "She has also been a role model for so many students who are now emerging as the leaders of the future. Throughout her long and productive career, Dr. Krasny has demonstrated innovation, resilience and creativity in showcasing the power of environmental education."

Established in 1987, the annual Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Education Research award recognizes researchers who conduct, report and promote environmental education. The award was presented at NAAEE's 48th Annual Conference in Lexington, KY with 10 other awards that recognize exemplary individuals and organizations in the field of environmental education.
