“This announcement by Kionix is terrific news for Lansing and Tompkins County and I was pleased to successfully secure funding and work with state officials to make this expansion by Kionix a reality,” said Senator Nozzolio. "Promoting and supporting high-tech businesses is the future of job growth in our region and all of New York State. This investment is another example of how we can create jobs and continue to make New York State the national leader in innovative and emerging industries."
Kionix Inc. was first established in Lansing in 1993 and specializes in Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) design and manufacturing. Some of their products include accelerometers, gyroscopes and microfluidic MEMS devices for automotive, consumer electronics and biomedical markets. The new business unit is focused on the commercialization of Kionix's microfluidics Dot-Chip technology-a disease detection device for global markets. The company hopes to launch a series of other proprietary products in infection management moving forward, but will initially commercialize a device that detects dangerous microbiological organisms, such as Avian Flu, much more effectively, cheaply, and quickly than other technologies that are currently used around the world.
"The expansion of our business into microfluidics presents Kionix with a new opportunity for substantial growth," stated Gregory Galvin, Kionix President and CEO. "We are very grateful for the strong support from New York State which makes it possible for us to locate this new activity here in the State."
In addition to the $250,000 state grant that Senator Nozzolio secured for the project, Kionix is eligible to apply to Empire State Development for a $500,000 Convertible Loan to be used towards the costs associated with equipping and readying the facility for the production of Dot-Chip detection systems.
