"By promoting computer re-use and recycling, Babbage's Basement is a wonderful resource that provides affordable used computers for the Ithaca community,” shares Charlie Trautmann, executive director of the Sciencenter. “In addition, proceeds from the sale of these used computers directly support educational programming at the Sciencenter."
Babbage's volunteers have been cleaning and refurbishing donated computers for many years. Dozens of models, both Mac and PC, are on display in the showroom. Babbage's Basement also includes two non-computer departments: Einsteins's Attic, which specializes in treasures for hobbyists including lab and photographic supplies, home electronics, and test equipment, and a department with furniture, office equipment, and supplies.
Guidelines for donations of computer and non-computer equipment are on the Babbage’s Basement web site, babbagesbasement.com. Donations can be dropped off at Babbage’s Basement during the scheduled hours. A limited pick-up service is available in the Ithaca area.
Rich Entlich, a Babbage’s volunteer, is excited about Saturday opening times. "More people from the general public, including those who work on Wednesdays, along with students will now be able to visit Babbage's. Many students like to help us out with computers, and Saturday is a very good time for them."
"Everybody wins in this situation," said volunteer Ted Crane. “Donors of used computers have an environmentally friendly, tax-deductible way to clear out equipment that is not being used; volunteers happily use their technical skills for the good of the community; the Ithaca area has a source of very affordable computers; and the Sciencenter benefits by receiving financial support.”
