Last Saturday over 100 children and parents enjoyed the entertainment of Tom Knight Puppets. This was the final entertainment program for the 2005 summer reading program at the Lansing Community Library. The theme of this years’ program was “Tune In @ Your Library.” The program was made possible with Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The three entertainment programs held for the summer reading program in June, July and August were free and open to the public as a result of public funds from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County/NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Program and an anonymous Lansing donor.
After Tom Knight finished his program Susan Rosenkoetter, Denise Kaminsky and Lisa Peter handed out the reading log, a reading certificate and a bag of prizes to each of the readers having completed at least six books. Susan made a surprise announcement telling every child in attendance that they would be receiving a free book. Punch and cupcakes were served. The cupcakes were made and donated by June Darfler. Susan Rosenkoetter watches the kids enjoying Tom Knight and his puppets Susan recognizes that some of the 121 readers enrolled in the summer reading program were unable to attend the program on Saturday and others have not completed reading six books. Readers that were unable to pick up their certificate, log and bag of prizes can stop in the library any time it is open and pick up these items. Readers can continue to add to their reading log until the first week of school in September. We hope to see all of these readers in the library often. Susan indicates the theme for the 2006 Summer Reading Program will be “Books: A Treasure.” | Tom Knight wrapped up this summer's successful Summer Reading program with an audience of 103 kids. Everyone was delighted with the show. "I have to credit the audience," said Mr. Knight. "The audience made it." Susan Rosenkoetter, who organized the event, said, "He's very good at involving the kids." That could also describe Ms. Rosenkoetter. She was very happy that the program was able to give each participant a book thanks to a combination of a donation by Scholastic Books and duplicate books the library had. She noted that next year's theme will be "Books: A Treasure" and she is already cooking up fun ideas like a treasure hunt for a title in the library. She thanked Lyle Wadell, Denise Kaminsky and Lisa Peter. But Mr. Wadell said, "To me Susan goes overboard. I don't think she is recognized as much as she should be." She certainly gets results. Lansing kids read over 1000 books this summer as a result of the program. This will be reported backl to the NY State Department of Education, the agency that provides materials for the program. -- Editor |
