Lansing’s Troop 48 participated this past weekend in the Baden Powell Council “Blue and Gray” camporee held in Greenwood Park . It was a beautiful spring weekend for camping and outdoor fun.

Troops from all over the Baden Powell Council area which includes troops from Cortland, Broome, Tioga, Tompkins counties and parts of the Northern tier of Pennsylvania converged on Greenwood Park in Center Lisle for what was billed as the “Second Battle of Greenwood Park.”

The Civil War themed event had patrols of scouts assigned as either Confederate or Union regiments to compete during the day at stations that tested leadership, communication, scout skills, athletic prowess, or just for fun games.

Troop 48 Assistant Scoutmaster Roger Garnett portrayed Brigadier General Richard Brooke Garnett C.S.A., who was killed during Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg.

Civil war reenactors presented some living history for us including General Robert E. Lee, a surgeons unit, and an infantryman demonstration. There was a museum of artifacts, musical instruments and literature about the Civil War which gave the scouts an outstanding insight into that tragic part of US history. Scouts from Troop 48 who had previously attended a trip to Gettysburg with the troop or went on our bike trip along the C&O canal last spring, where we stopped at Harper’s Ferry and the Antietam Battlefield, had a better understanding of that period in our history.

An army can’t travel on an empty stomach and we didn’t with parents Mike and Sue Coles cooking for the troop.  Scout Javin Craig helped and got in some cooking practice by preparing dutch oven brownies for the troop after dinner.

The camporee ended with a roaring campfire program where the winning regiment was given thanks by a grateful country and a flag to take home with them, followed by skits a and some civil war favorite songs before the boys went back to their campsite.

Not wanting to change history , although the Lansing troop did represent the 8th Virginia regiment, but it appeared that the North won again.
