In the year 2000 there were nine more women living in the Town of Lansing (including the Village) than there were men.  The population was 10,521 and the median age was 34.8 years old, just six months older than the national median age.  There were 582 kids under five years old, 7,779 over 18, and 1,058 65 or older.  84.1% of the population was white, with 4.1% black or African American, 932 Asian, and 4 Pacific Islander. The average household had 2.33 people, and the average family numbered 2.95.

The 2000 census is the most recent measure we have of our community.  But you can extrapolate some things, more or less.  If you subtract the Village population Town residents outside the village numbered 7,104.  With about 30 new homes built in the Town per year you can figure that 30 homes x 7 years x 2.33 = 489.3 new people, more or less.  So the population of the Town of Lansing not including the Village is probably around 7,600 by now.

In 2000 the Village had 447 owner-occupied housing units, while renters accounted for 1,173.  That is proportionally a lot of renters compared to the Town, which had 1986 homes occupied by owners and 786 apartments.  The median value of homes in Lansing at that time was $127,000, $8,200 more than the US median.

Between Town and Village denizens, 5,586, or 69.7% were employed with an average commute time of 17.8 minutes, just enough time to hear a little Dave Vieser in the morning, or at that time, Casey Stevens.  The median household income was $48,250 for both Town and Village together, though it was lower in the Village alone by about $10,000 per year.

109 families were deemed to be below the poverty level, 66 of them in the Village, and 666 individuals were considered below the poverty level, 359 of them in the Village.

Of Lansingites in the combined Town and Village over 25 93.2% had high school diplomas and 52% had a bachelor's degree or better.  That was a lot higher than the national average of 80.4% high school graduates and 24.4 college grads.  In the Village the percentage of high school graduates was better than the overall Town with a whopping 95.7%.  But the percentage of college grads 25 years old or over was lower at 74.8%.

702 were civilian veterans, and 1,141 were on disability.  1,305 were foreign-born and a whopping 1,345 spoke a language other than English when they were at home.

There were 2,440 married men and 2,228 married women.  639 of the married men lived in the Village and 610 of the married women.

Lansing's 10,521 people were a small part of the 248.7 million nationwide, when the US population between 1990 and 2000 grew 9.8%  At that time the Northeast US saw the least growth at 5.5%, while the West grew by 19.7%.

But you wouldn't know it in Tompkins County which, despite being located in a high tax state that has not been especially friendly to business, has been growing and growing.  If the County's estimates turn out to be true, Lansing is the prime spot in the county for the next spurt of growth.  When the 2010 census results are published we'll get a more accurate look at how much we've grown since the year 2000.

Statistics taken from the United States Census Bureau Web site   pages for the Town and Village of Lansing.  Note: Because the Village is enveloped in the Town you subtract Village statistics from Town numbers to get the numbers for the part of the Town of Lansing not including the Village.
