RIO GRANDE RIVER: Rio Grande is “River Big,” of course, so why do we say “River Big River?” We have lots of redundant place names, and the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired has asked me to solicit more from ex-patients and readers of this column. I’ve seen South Street Road, for instance. The La Brea Tar Pits means The The Tar Tar Pits. And some places look or sound like oxymorons, such as Little Big Horn, or Wright Ave. Next Left.
