Three Middle School students attended last Monday's (9/26) school board meeting to report on money they collected for Hurricane Katrina relief. Nina Lindberg and Nicolo Gentile, Student Council Organization (SCO) board members, and Martin Keefe reported they had raised about $4,500 from two fund drives.

Martin organized an "Awareness Bracelet" sale. His mother Janet owns ADminders, a company that produces promotional items to be given away or sold by businesses and organizations. She convinced her supplier to sell the bracelets to the school council at cost as well as to donate 35 cents per bracelet. This was matched by her industry organization.

The bracelet drive was also available to Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce members. About $600 was raised by the Lansing students. $7000 has been raised by all organizations selling the bracelets. "I am proud of the Middle School's effort and resulting donation to help the Red Cross help others," says Mrs. Keefe. "The ripple effects of this fund raiser have produced a great deal of awareness and much needed funds to aid the Red Cross down South."

The SCO also conducted a "change drive" where students were encouraged to donate change in their pockets to help hurricane victims. This drive was also successful, raising about $3,900. Nicolo reported that the two fund raisers together raised over $4500. Martin noted that the bracelets are still for sale at the Chamber of Commerce and at Lansing High School.

School Board President Bonita Lindberg presented certificates to the students, saying, "The Board thanks you for your efforts." She also thanked ADminders for providing the bracelets.
