Scouts from Lansing’s Troop 48, along local Order of the Arrow members and other troops helped the new bouldering wall at Camp Barton which opened this summer. Five years in planning and construction, the structure consists of a large number of phone poles donated by NYSEG which they took down when they widened the road near the mall. In addition to the poles are 2x6 walls, and the exterior is clad with sliding walls, allowing maintenance access to all of the climbing holds.

Members of the troop helped with a few stages, including framing, staining, and filling the floor with woodchips.  They also helped with painting and marking the interior walls.


The indoor wall allows climbers to work sideways along 3 sides of the building, with varying hand grips, foot holds, and optional obstacles such as hoops and rods.  The wall is a total of 112 feet long, and climbers can work on a section, or try to go the whole distance. They keep within a range based on their own height, allowing everyone to enjoy the wall within a safe range.

The wall officially opened for use this summer as part of the Barton Summer Camp program, with the official ribbon cutting last Wednesday. The wall will be available for Cub and Boy Scout groups with trained leaders throughout the year. Last week boys from troop 48 enjoyed using the wall during their stay at summer camp.


Camp Barton, operated by the Baden-Powel Boy Scout council is located on the West Shore of Cayuga at Frontenac Point.
