ImageThe Tompkins County SPCA wants to give out 20 kittens before Christmas.  The shelter also has 200 adult cats that are looking for homes.

"For the holiday season, the SPCA of Tompkins County would like to turn as many houses into homes for shelter animals as possible," says the SPCA's Maggie Thomas. "Surprisingly, in addition to many wonderful older cats and fabulous dogs, we currently have 20 kittens who are just 10-12 weeks old available for adoption. While 'kitten season' normally reaches its height during the summer and early fall, cats are increasingly having litters later in the year and even during the winter months."

Thomas stresses that it is important that families think about the long-term commitment involved with having a pet.  Cats may live for 15-20 years, so the immediacy of bringing a pet into a home for the holiday season must be tempered by an understanding that the animal will be part of your life for a long time.

"With over 200 adult cats and 20 new kittens available for adoption this week, we encourage pet lovers to think about sharing their homes with faithful feline companions this holiday season," Thomas says.  "Or, consider bringing home a dog who will be your new 'BFF' (best friend forever!)."

The shelter spays or neuters all animals before adoption, and makes sure they are up-to-date on vaccinations, micro-chipped, and have one month of free pet health insurance, along with many other benefits.

The kittens are only available at the 1640 Hanshaw Road Dorothy and Roy Park Pet Adoption Center facility.  Other animals are available at a mini-adoption center at the Shops at Ithaca Mall from now until December 23.
